## How each country renews passports abroad

### United Kingdom passports

Apply online on GOV.UK's overseas passport service, post your old passport to HM Passport Office in the UK, and receive the new one by courier. There's no fast-track service from abroad.
- Processing: about 4–6 weeks
- You hand in or post your current passport — plan no travel until the new one arrives.

### United States passports

Renew through the US embassy or consulate for your country of residence with form DS-82 — by mail, courier or in person, as that post sets. Online renewal isn't open to people living abroad. You can renew with DS-82 if your last passport was issued when you were 16 or older, within the last 15 years, and you still have it.
- Adult fee abroad: 130 USD
- Child fee abroad: 135 USD
- Processing: about 4–6 weeks
- You hand in or post your current passport — plan no travel until the new one arrives.
- Children under 16: form DS-11, in person at the embassy or consulate, with both parents (or one with the other's written consent).

### France passports

Make a pre-application online (ANTS), then book an appointment at the French consulate for your fingerprints — the passport is collected there. The fee is paid at the consulate in local currency.

### Philippines passports

Book an appointment with the Philippine embassy or consulate (passport.gov.ph or the post's own system) and go in person — photo, fingerprints and signature are taken there. Many posts accept cash only; renew at least 9 months before expiry.
- Adult fee abroad: 60 USD
- Child fee abroad: 60 USD
- Processing: about 6–8 weeks
- You keep your current passport while it's renewed — you can still travel on it if it's valid.
- Minors apply in person with a parent, with the child's birth certificate.

### Australia passports

Fill in the renewal form online on the Australian Passport Office site (choose “overseas”), print it, and post it with photos to the Australian embassy or high commission, or lodge it there. Don't send your current passport.

- Processing: about 6–8 weeks
- You keep your current passport while it's renewed — you can still travel on it if it's valid.

### Canada passports

Adults renew from abroad by mail or at a Canadian government office abroad. Living in the US? Renew by mail from there.
- Processing: about 4–6 weeks
- A child's passport can't be renewed — apply for a new one each time.

### New Zealand passports

Renew online on the New Zealand passports site from anywhere — the new passport is couriered to you.

Apply online with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and collect the new passport at the Singapore mission you choose.

## When to start

Counted back from expiry: 6 months (many countries refuse entry with less left), the longest processing time, and two weeks' margin.

## What to bring

- Your current passport.
- Passport photos that meet your country's specs (some embassies take them on site).
- The application form, filled in.
- Proof of your address or status where you live (residence card, visa), if asked.
- The fee in the accepted form — many embassies take cash or cards only in local currency.
- Name changed? Bring the original marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order (with a certified translation if it's in another language).

## Watch out

- Websites charging to “fast-track” or “pre-check” a passport — only the official service can speed it up, and most can't from abroad.
- Photo booths and apps that don't follow your country's photo rules — a rejected photo is the most common delay.
- “Fixers” outside embassies asking for money to get you an appointment.
